The Gift of Hot Days

On hot days
Everything slows down
Everything becomes simple.
Stay cool.

This is the gift of the
Hot days:
It teaches us to
Listen.

Our bodies scream loudly
On hot days
“Drink water!
Stay cool!
Slow down!”
And our big, complex world
Becomes small.
And only the essentials
Remain.

The gift of
Hot days
Is to teach us there is
A core
At the center
Of our complex life
And when push comes to
Shove
Only the Core remains.
So it goes with your
Soul,
Which craves
But one thing
Though the one thing
Masquerades as many.

On a hot day
Your soul cries out
For Love alone.

Soon

I know
That you will be
Home
Soon.

I wait with joyful longing
As you
Choose
To delay.

When?

Will it be today
That you decide
You can bear this suffering
(That suffering)
No longer?
Or will you delay
One more day
One more century
One more civilization
One more epoch.

Do you want to be
The Last
On board this train
My dear?

The darkness says yes.
I say no.
Whom will you heed?

A Thousand Shrill Voices

I have a metaphor for you.
Seagulls flock
And scream
When you eat the chicken leg
In front of them
And disappear quickly
Once dinner is put away.

Do you see?

I will explain.

When you do
What you must
There will be
A thousand shrill voices
Longing to disturb you.
When you stop
They are satisfied.

The lesson?

Do what you must
Anyway.

The Missing Thing

It’s not-entirely-untrue
That you have
A God-shaped hole
In your life.

As a matter of fact,
You do.
But it’s not as small
As you think.
It’s God-shaped,
Yes,
And you-sized.

You are the God-shaped hole.
So, fill yourself with Love.
Fill yourself with Peace.
Fill yourself, your emptiness
With All Eternity.

Accept no substitute
For you cannot —
How could you be —
Satisfied
With anything else
Anything beyond
The Missing Thing
To begin with?

Valet Parking, Part II

They’re always bidding you
To delay
Or return outright.
Lost keys,
No making change for a hundred,
And your vehicle!

Oh, the structural damage they’ve done
On the about-town joyride
They’ve taken you for
While you were distracted.

Upholstery trashed
Paint job ruined
Bumpers missing
Tires slashed
Gas tank empty

Why do you put up with this?
Sane people would complain
So loudly
With such elegance
And blasphemy
That God Herself
Would come running
With legions of angels
In the Vanguard
Clearing out
The valet parking for hell
And lighting
The now clear path
Home.

Sublimation

I see you there
Standing on the
Wrong Side of the veil
Hesitating
Distracted
By the ten thousand things
Whose deeper purpose
Is only to distract
You
For one more moment
And then one more
Until the cows come home
And trample you
Dead.

Don’t blame the cows.
Don’t blame the distractors.
Do you not see
Blame is one of
The original ten thousand?
The only thing to do, then,
The only act that will allow you
The courage
And fearlessness
Necessary
To brave the gentle veil
That seems iron clad
But in truth evaporates
At a touch,
Is to, finally, see
See through
All
These
Lies.

Love Is Knocking

What will you do
When the Friend comes knocking
This time?

Barricade the doors
Shutter the window
Pretend no one lives
In the quiet dark within?

But aren’t you tired
Of playing that old game?

Will you nod and smile,
The fixed rictus grin
Of the confused
And intimidated?

You have more options
Than just these two.

Sink back into the knowing
That you have been
Utterly translucent
All this time.
Your actions,
My darling one,
Were quite predictable
From a certain point of view.

Don’t fret.

The Friend knew it would come to this.
Long has She waited
For this Beautiful Moment
When your longing for Love
Outweighs your fear.

This time when He knocks
Breathe deeply
Smile
Your Salvation is at hand.

Breathe deeply
Smile
Know that the time of pain
Is over
Love is knocking
Sweetly singing a serenade
To your soul
Which you imagine
Is shriveled and charred
After so long in hell.

Au contraire, ma cherie!

Your soul is as
Fresh
And Beautiful
As the day it fell asleep
In God’s Arms
And accidentally
Dreamed a nightmare
Forgetting that the doorway home
Was inside the Heart
All along.

Make Room

The Sweetness of Life
Is calling to you
Calling you to
Abandon
These notions of pain
These ways and means
You use to torture yourself
And others.

Did you not know
What you do to yourself
You do to others
You do to God?

The Friend is calling to you
To abandon the pain
You cling to so closely.
It is the only way to make room
For Him.
