The Guided Tour

Is it time yet?
Am I too early,
or too late?
Is there a moment
in between the two,
or is there no way
to be perfect
here?

Do I know who
or where I am
in this vicious
knife dance
we laughably call
existence,
or have I lost
all that as well?

Which side am I on?

Either or is a game
for fools.
You always lose
eventually.

Choose the one thing
that has no opposite,
and life will open for you,
give you the guided tour
to God.

Flashing

Lights are flashing
as far as you can see.
Blinking, moving,
in a complicated dance,
that almost seems
to make sense.

If you stare
too long, you almost start
to think you see the meaning
in the chaos.

But that will mislead you,
because it is different
for everyone who stares.

Wars have resulted
from this confusion.

My advice
is to find the one
bright light
that never changes.
It will lead you
home.

Home

Some seek
to write about this world
perfectly.
Realism.

Some build
elaborate beautiful
unlikely worlds.
Fantasy.
(Dragons
are a sure sign,
though
there are others.)

But neither of these
describe reality,
and this world
doesn’t
either.

This world
was built
when a peaceful garden
was deemed
too boring
to contain us,
and we wanted
an adventure.

(The tree was a lie.
A later addition
by some unknown
dramatist.
The snake, however,
is still very cunning.)

We have all had
many
varied
contradictory adventures
since then,
some quite horrible.
For when we were trying
to get home,
we lost our way
and wandered
into nightmare.

God has put up
all manner of signs
to guide us,
no matter who
or where we are.

They look vastly different
depending
on whether we are lost
in the desert
or the swamp
and on what kind of body
and life experience
we happen to be
carrying with us
this time around.

All of them say
in various languages
spoken or not
Love. Always Love,
My Dear.
Love will guide You Home.

Patience

Distractions are everywhere, here.
How perfect coffee is made
What happens when black holes die
The search for the perfect shoes
And every other preoccupation
This life can manufacture.

The point is, of course, distraction.
The real gain is hidden behind
Quietly waiting.

Has your dissatisfaction
Reached critical levels
Yet?

No?

Never fear.
God is patient.

Variations on a Theme

Your deepest pain is sending
Letters
The contents of which are
Shockingly similar
One to the next
All variations on a theme,
Really.

They all
Beg
Plead
And threaten.

You’ve been recycling them
Unopened.

But now that I have
Your attention,
I will humbly admit
To being in their employ.

No, don’t shut the door.

You have been
Cordially Invited
To attend to the
Healing
Of your deepest pain.
Your RSVP is overdue
And your suffering
Is only increasing.

But no–
Don’t dress in your
Dirty paint-stained shirt
And the jeans
That have holes
In unmentionable places.

Put on your party dress
Because as soon as you’re well
We’ll dance all night.

Rituals

Some start each morning
with a ritual
of screaming at the world
for waking them to another day.
Some use coffee instead
to blunt the pain.
There are a million ways
here
to distract
from the one
problem.

Separation from God,
Lack of Love,
Fear of the Light.
This is the difficult thing
to keep going,
and the difficult thing
to end.

God is always,
always
so willing to help us,
as soon as we accept him
back into our arms.

Listen to the voice
that directs you,
calmly and without
judgement,
in the ways of love.
Make that your practice,
and soon,
you will not scream
anymore
at the prospect
of another
day.

Cheeky Keys

My key ring is enormous.
Gargantuan.
I have a hundred
Keys to God.

Sometimes
I get guerrilla
And start dropping them
In seemingly
Random places
That you often frequent.

You picked one up
Last week
An orange skeleton key
Bright brass
And you had
An unwavering
And odd feeling
It was smiling at you
That you promptly forgot
As you lost it
In the bottom
Of your bag.

No matter.

I will drop
A hundred more winking keys
That will cheekily grin
Until you finally
Grin back.

Seeking

We are all seeking
the footbridge
back to God.

We wander,
sometimes near
sometimes far,
though choirs of angels direct our way.

God waits
for the moment that we

Finally

step on the bridge.

And then he runs to us
and wraps us up
in a big
bear hug.
